Women who visit us for breast implant consultation here at our Boston plastic surgery practice often have a lot of concerns concerning the surgery. One of their main concerns is whether breast implants will interfere with breastfeeding or not if they choose to conceive at a later date following surgery.

Silicone Concerns

The silicone levels in breast implants is one of the common cause of concern in regards to breast implants and breastfeeding. The truth is that several FDA clinical studies have found no solid evidence linking silicone implants and harm to the newborn’s health. In fact, it has been revealed that the silicone content of infant formulas and store-bought dairy milk is far greater than the ones in silicone implants.

It Depends on the Incision

By and large, there should be no problem with breastfeeding following breast augmentation. However, any interference with breastfeeding post-breast implants will depend on the surgical incision done during the surgery. Incisions done through the armpit and beneath the breast folds should not cause any problem at all. On the other hand, the periareolar incision (the “smile” incision around the areola) has been shown to present greater risks of interference in breastfeeding.
