What is Gynecomastia Surgery?

Most men in Boston and in the US are not aware that gynecomastia surgery is available for men who have enlarged or female-like breasts. Gynecomastia is a medical condition that causes men to have swollen breast tissues. For our Boston gynecomastia surgery patients, this happens due to a decrease in the amount of testosterone in the body relative to the estrogen levels.

For some patients with gynecomastia, it is caused by genetics as well as the effects of certain medications that they take. Men who suffer from gynecomastia often find it hard to cope with this problem so it is highly recommended for them to consider talking to our Boston gynecomastia surgery expert, Dr. Russo, to reduce the size of their breasts to a more proportional and masculine contour.

What is Gynecomastia Surgery like?

Gynecomastia surgery involves using the combination of a liposuction procedure as well as removing excess glandular tissue.

Liposuction alone can reduce the size of the breasts if the condition is caused only by excess fat. Your surgeon will use a cannula that will be inserted in the breast through small incisions. This will help loosen the excess fat in the breasts that will be suctioned out later on. Excess skin will be removed by making incisions in the breasts.

We strive to provide the best gynecomastia surgery Boston has to offer, reducing the size of the areola if there is a need to. Your surgeon will remove portions of your areola and reposition it to achieve a more masculine appearance. Gynecomastia surgery is performed under general anesthesia in the hospital on an outpatient basis.

What Should I Expect After Gynecomastia surgery?

The results of gynecomastia surgery are permanent. Right after the procedure, our patients can experience temporary bruising, slight swelling, numbness, breast tenderness, and sometimes a burning sensation.

Patients who have undergone Gynecomastia surgery are usually able to go back to work about 3 to 7 days after the procedure. Patients should expect the swelling and bruising to go down in about 3 to 6 months after gynecomastia surgery. We do advise our patients to take it slow after gynecomastia surgery and they can resume doing more strenuous activities in about 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure.
