What is SkinPen Microneedling?

Microneedling has been a trusted skin rejuvenation method for decades. It creates tiny micro-lesions to help stimulate natural collagen production. These controlled micro-injuries allow the skin to heal and regenerate, effectively treating wrinkles, fine lines, skin laxity, scarring, and other skin concerns. The SkinPen microneedling system is an FDA-approved, state-of-the-art device that provides a high level of precision and customizable treatments. Designed to be safe and minimally invasive, the SkinPen requires no anesthesia, sedatives, with minimal downtime.

SkinPen Benefits

This treatment is a great option for nearly any skin type and tone and can transform a wide variety of skin concerns. Because this treatment is so precise and targeted, it’s great for even the smallest acne scars or blemishes. In addition, its versatility means it can be used nearly anywhere on the body for issues like sunspots and surgical scars or even to fade the appearance of stretch marks. Our Boston SkinPen patients enjoy many benefits like:

  • Soften wrinkles and lines in the face or neck
  • Improve skin laxity
  • Address acne scars on the face, chest, or other areas
  • Correct hyperpigmentation anywhere on the body
  • Non-surgical, minimally invasive
  • Little to no downtime for most patients

Is SkinPen right for me?

Ideal candidates for SkinPen microneedling include adults looking to address fine lines, wrinkles, uneven skin texture, acne scars, and other common skin concerns without invasive procedures. Patients who simply want to boost collagen production and refresh their skin’s appearance are also great candidates. Some individuals who may need to avoid this treatment include those with active skin infections, wounds, or inflammatory conditions. Certain skin disorders like eczema, psoriasis, or rosacea in the treatment area may worsen with microneedling.

Dr. Russo - Boston Plastic Surgeon

SkinPen Consultation and Preparation

The goal of our team, led by Boston plastic surgeon Dr. Joseph Russo, is incredible patient care and unmatched aesthetic results. Whether it’s a quick in-office procedure like microneedling or comprehensive cosmetic surgery, we strive to make our patients feel confident in what we have to offer. At your consultation, we will ensure that you are well-informed and feel comfortable with both our staff and your overall treatment plan. We will discuss your aesthetic concerns and goals, your medical history and decide if this treatment is a great option for you. Prior to treatment, we’ll ask that you avoid sun exposure for a few days and stop using any retinoids about 5-7 days before.

The SkinPen Procedure

First, to ensure maximum comfort, a topical numbing agent is typically applied to the treatment area. Once the skin is numbed, your aesthetic medical provider will use the SkinPen device to create tiny micro-injuries across the targeted areas. Any necessary adjustments will also be made to the equipment in real-time for optimal results. The procedure is generally quick, lasting around 30-45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

SkinPen Results, Recovery, and Aftercare

Following treatment with the SkinPen Boston patients are able to resume normal activities, including driving or working, although the skin may appear slightly red or sensitive. Any side effects generally subside within 24–48 hours. We will advise patients to avoid sun exposure, wear mineral SPF sunscreen, and refrain from applying makeup or heavy skincare products for about 24 hours. Most patients begin to see improvements in skin texture and tone within a week of treatment, with optimal results typically visible after a series of three to four sessions spaced about four weeks apart.

SkinPen Microneedling FAQ

Microneedling side effects are rare and typically mild but could include swelling, bruising, itchiness, or redness. If they do occur, side effects are usually very temporary. Please notify the office with any of your concerns.

Most Boston SkinPen patients see results for about three to six months, but this will vary depending on each patient and their cell turnover rate.

Many patients experience a more vibrant look right after treatment, and as collagen continues to regenerate, optimal results should be visible around four weeks after treatment.

This procedure pairs very well with PRP and PRP injections to optimize results. We also recommend medical grade skincare post treatment to supercharge healing.

The cost of SkinPen Microneedling depends on several factors, including the area to be treated, the patient’s unique needs, and whether it will be combined with other treatments.
