What is Botox?

Botox has been used therapeutically for more than 17 years to treat a variety of medical conditions. It is approved in more than 75 countries and remains the most-studied botulinum toxin and one of the most widely researched medicines in the world.

In 2002, the same formulation – under the label Botox Cosmetic – was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people ages 18 to 65.

Joseph A. Russo MD is the largest Boston Botox provider and the 35th in the country. Call today and schedule a consultation to find out if Botox is right for you.

Botox benefits

Approved by the FDA in 1989, Botox is well-known because of its many benefits, which provide effective treatment methods for a variety of issues.

By paralyzing or weakening muscles from targeting specific nerves, Botox is excellent for improving frown lines, or “11s”, between the eyebrows, crow’s feet around the eyes, bunny lines on the nose, and forehead wrinkles. In addition, Botox has several other added benefits in that it can treat several other medical conditions.

This includes paralyzing muscles involved in lazy eyes and uncontrollable blinking. Botox injections can also reduce issues from an overactive bladder and excessive sweating in your underarms, hands, and feet by addressing the muscles that stimulate these areas. Moreover, Botox is also extremely helpful at easing tension and pain from chronic migraines.

What causes frown lines between the brows?

The lines that appear between your brows actually result from muscle movement and the passage of time.

When powerful muscles between the brows contract, they draw the brows together, causing the skin to fold or furrow. As skin becomes less elastic with age, those folds or furrows result in stubborn lines.

How does Botox work?

Botox is administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles responsible for frown lines between the brows

Botox comes with a highly purified form of OnabotulinumtoxinA. This active ingredient is a neurotoxin and protein that blocks nerve signals. By blocking the release of a chemical that causes these muscles to contract, Botox Cosmetic enables them to relax.

The effects are very localized and, when administered by an experienced physician, Botox does not affect your ability to smile, laugh, or otherwise show expression. Botox is the only product of its kind that has been approved for use in this area.

Botox FAQ

Choosing a Boston Botox provider who is not only experienced but also sensitive to patients’ possible anxiety involved with the procedure is critical. Our master nurse injectors make sure that each and every Botox treatment goes as smoothly as possible. Our dedicated staff work with patients from start to finish to keep them educated about the process, including what to expect and when they can start to see results from the procedure. We also ensure that patients are 100% satisfied with the results, following up with them to determine if supplementary treatment is needed.

Localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising may be associated with the injection. Boston Botox patients may also experience headaches and other pain around the area of the face where the treatments occurred. If you need to, you can take over-the-counter pain medications to relieve your discomfort, or request a prescription if you think one is needed. The most common side effects following injection include temporary eyelid droop and nausea. However, this is not a cause for alarm and will not last long.

At Joseph A. Russo, MD our master aestheticians are experts at performing dermal filler injections. They will ensure that you have the right amount of Botox for your needs in order to treat your affected muscles correctly for optimum results. Although you may see a marked improvement, treatment with Botox does not make you look like you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows. You may not have the same ease of frowning to the same degree, but your face will otherwise still move in natural ways, allowing you to express yourself as easily as before.

Botox is an approved treatment method for anyone over 18. You can have injections for medical reasons or to smooth wrinkles and lines, whether they’re barely noticeable or causing you discomfort with your appearance.

The Botox results will last up to six months. You can also have touch-up injections as needed to keep your face wrinkle-free or to prolong the benefits for your medical condition, such as migraines.

Botox costs change according to what areas you have treated, how many areas you have treated if you’re addressing a specific medical condition (as listed above), if you combine Botox with other procedures, or if you have multiple treatments. If you have Botox for medical reasons, such as treating an overactive bladder, then your insurance provider will cover some or all of the costs of the procedure. If you decide to get Botox as an elective cosmetic treatment, you will need to pay the costs on your own.
