Botox has been used therapeutically for more than 17 years to treat a variety of medical conditions. It is approved in more than 75 countries and remains the most-studied botulinum toxin and one of the most widely researched medicines in the world.
In 2002, the same formulation – under the label Botox Cosmetic – was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of moderate to severe frown lines between the brows in people ages 18 to 65.
Dr. Russo is the largest Boston Botox provider and the 35th in the country. Call today and schedule a consultation to find out if Botox is right for you.
Approved by the FDA in 1989, Botox is well-known because of its many benefits, which provide effective treatment methods for a variety of issues.
By paralyzing or weakening muscles from targeting specific nerves, Botox is excellent for improving frown lines, or “11s”, between the eyebrows, crow’s feet around the eyes, bunny lines on the nose, and forehead wrinkles. In addition, Botox has several other added benefits in that it can treat several other medical conditions.
This includes paralyzing muscles involved in lazy eyes and uncontrollable blinking. Botox injections can also reduce issues from an overactive bladder and excessive sweating in your underarms, hands, and feet by addressing the muscles that stimulate these areas. Moreover, Botox is also extremely helpful at easing tension and pain from chronic migraines.
The lines that appear between your brows actually result from muscle movement and the passage of time.
When powerful muscles between the brows contract, they draw the brows together, causing the skin to fold or furrow. As skin becomes less elastic with age, those folds or furrows result in stubborn lines.

For the most part, anyone wishing to improve their appearance by removing wrinkles and lines from their face is a good candidate for Botox. Women who are pregnant or nursing are not recommended to receive Botox treatments, and all candidates must be in good health overall in order to be a qualified candidate. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, Botox is not a recommended treatment.
Botox injections are given in the doctor’s office. Because you will not need anesthesia, the entire procedure for Botox usually takes no more than 10-30 minutes but can last longer if you have more than one area treated, or if you combine Botox with other treatments.
Botox is administered via a few tiny injections directly into the muscles responsible for frown lines between the brows
Botox comes with a highly purified form of OnabotulinumtoxinA. This active ingredient is a neurotoxin and protein that blocks nerve signals. By blocking the release of a chemical that causes these muscles to contract, Botox Cosmetic enables them to relax.
The effects are very localized and, when administered by an experienced physician, Botox does not affect your ability to smile, laugh, or otherwise show expression. Botox is the only product of its kind that has been approved for use in this area.
Botox is a quick and minimally invasive procedure consisting of a few tiny injections. Your doctor will determine exactly where to administer these injections to achieve the best results for you.
No anesthesia is required during a Botox procedure, though he or she may choose to numb the area with a cold pack or anesthetic cream prior to injecting. Discomfort is minimal and brief. Localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/swelling may be associated with the injection.
Botox injections are non-surgical, minimally invasive treatments. As such, you will not need any anesthesia and can drive yourself back home (or work or school or other) once they are complete. While there is no recovery time needed, you should avoid any strenuous exercise or physical activities due to possible bruising and/or swelling from the injections.
Botox is a proven treatment for restoring youthful contours to your upper face and forehead. It’s also an effective method for treating several medical conditions, from migraines to overactive bladders to excessive sweating.
If you are interested in treating the muscles that cause both wrinkles and these medical conditions, Botox can provide the relief you’ve been seeking. To learn more, take the next step and call or email today to set up your consultation.
After your Botox injection(s), there will probably be some swelling and bruising at the injection site. Bruising should fade within a week, while swelling can last a little longer. This will keep the effects of your treatment from becoming fully visible until the swelling is gone. However, you can still expect to see results within days after your treatment, and the appearance of the area between your brows may continue to improve for up to a week. Your own results may vary – be sure to talk to your doctor about what you can expect.

Localized pain, infection, inflammation, tenderness, swelling, redness, and/or bleeding/bruising may be associated with the Botox injection. Patients may also experience headaches and other pain around the area of the face where the treatments occurred. If you need to, you can take over-the-counter pain medications to relieve your discomfort, or request a prescription if you think one is needed. The most common side effects following injection include temporary eyelid droop and nausea. However, this is not a cause for alarm and will not last long.
Dr. Russo and his team are experts at performing dermal filler injections. They will ensure that you have the right amount of Botox for your needs in order to treat your affected muscles correctly for optimum results. Although you may see a marked improvement, treatment with Botox does not make you look like you’ve “had work done.” The muscle activity that causes frown lines is simply reduced, so you can still frown or look surprised without the wrinkles and creases between your brows. You may not have the same ease of frowning to the same degree, but your face will otherwise still move in natural ways, allowing you to express yourself as easily as before.
Botox is an approved treatment method for anyone over 18. You can have injections for medical reasons or to smooth wrinkles and lines, whether they’re barely noticeable or causing you discomfort with your appearance.
The results of a Botox injection will last up to six months. You can also have touch-up injections as needed to keep your face wrinkle-free or to prolong the benefits for your medical condition, such as migraines.
Botox costs change according to what areas you have treated, how many areas you have treated if you’re addressing a specific medical condition (as listed above), if you combine Botox with other procedures, or if you have multiple treatments. If you have Botox for medical reasons, such as treating an overactive bladder, then your insurance provider will cover some or all of the costs of the procedure. If you decide to get Botox as an elective cosmetic treatment, you will need to pay the costs on your own. Botox injections qualify for rewards through Allergan’s Allē Rewards program, which can add points for savings.
