Many of our patients have skin complaints such as wrinkles, scars, hyperpigmentation, and blemishes. These issues can negatively impact your self-esteem and confidence, even leading to feelings of anxiety and depression. Diminishing problems like these can give a tremendous boost of self-confidence to the patient. Unfortunately, too many potential patients are unaware of some recent innovations in the field of cosmetic dermatology, namely Microneedling and PRP.

What is Microneedling?

Microneedling is a skin treatment procedure that encourages the formation of new collagen and elastin through the creation of many tiny micro-channels in the skin. In effect, we are “tricking” your own body into resurfacing your skin in a safe and gradual manner.

During the actual treatment, a bunch of micro-openings are made in the skin through a special device. While virtually invisible to the naked eye, these tiny punctures start a healing cascade that ultimately results in smoother, more youthful-looking skin that has a more even skin tone.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP)

PRP therapy was popularized by superstar celebrities and athletes like NBA player Kobe Bryant. The process involves extracting the patient’s own blood and spinning it in a centrifuge to separate out and concentrate the platelets. This serum helps dramatically enhance and speed healing for injuries that are slow to heal. It can also be used for skin rejuvenation.

Combining Microneedling with PRP Therapy

It was discovered that PRP therapy becomes even more powerful when used in conjunction with a Microneedling treatment. This is believed to be because Microneedling creates many tiny channels in the epidermis or outer skin layer. Your skin has an outer barrier called the stratum corneum, which prevents larger molecules from penetrating. This matrix of dead skin cells, fats, and oils is punctured by Microneedling, allowing topical PRP to penetrate more deeply and effectively.

Treatment Benefits

Microneedling with PRP therapy is safe and effective for minimizing the appearance of skin problems like scars due to acne or injury, fine lines and wrinkles, sagging skin, discoloration and blemishes, and rough skin texture. The procedure is minimally-invasive, so you can expect to have a much shorter recovery period than with traditional cosmetic surgery. You can also expect to have fewer complications for the same reason. Multiple treatments are often recommended, as your microneedling with PRP therapy sessions are cumulative in terms of results.
