Some patients are afflicted with certain skin conditions, which can leave the skin scarred with uneven surfaces and oddly pigmented. Because these irregularities occur in the upper layers of the dermis and not on the surface, the application of topical products would never reach the root of the problem. Undergoing a dermabrasion (or facial sanding) procedure can help improve the skin and lessen visible facial imperfections.
At our Boston plastic surgery office dermabrasion is performed under a local anesthetic. Abrading of the skin is performed utilizing a mechanical instrument. The tool used is dome-shaped and covered with a rough or wired surface that rotates at a very high speed. As this tool moves across the skin, the dead, keratinized epidermis is scraped away in layers, until the dermis is revealed. The injured skin will go through a process to heal itself. As a result of the healing process, the body creates a new and smoother surface.
Mild to moderate discomfort is experienced with most patients for the first week. A thick layer of antibiotic ointment is to be applied for the first ten days in order to protect the fresh, new skin beginning to form. Most healing is done by the first month and makeup can be used to camouflage the residual pinkness of the skin that remains. After about three months the patient is completely healed.
*Pre-requisite – Skin must be prepped with specific products for a minimum of six weeks*
