What Is Juvederm? | Dermal Fillers | Joseph A. Russo MD

Juvederm is the brand name of an injectable gel containing hyaluronic acid. It is one of the most commonly administered dermal fillers, and it can be used to add volume to the lips, around the corners of the mouth, and in other areas where loose, wrinkled skin is apparent. Dermal fillers are popular because they plump up the skin slightly, smoothing out wrinkles and smile lines without the need for surgery or chemical peel treatments.
Juvederm is one of many dermal fillers that use hyaluronic acid to draw in and hold moisture. Other fillers may contain microspheres suspended in a gel. These fillers are meant to add shape and structure to the lips or other areas of the face. Juvederm is recommended for treating areas where thinning skin is not being properly supported by the underlying tissues.

Consultation Before Treatment

Because there are so many different types of dermal fillers available, it’s best to consult with us so that you can be more fully informed of the advantages and disadvantages of each. At our office in Boston Juvederm is a product we highly recommend because the hyaluronic acid it contains yields long-lasting results for skin that is wrinkled or furrowed. The acid holds moisture for quite some time, and most of our clients need not have the treatment repeated for nine months or longer.

During your consultation with us, we will examine your facial features, look at the contours, note the skin thickness and tone and determine whether Juvederm is the ideal treatment. We will then schedule a treatment appointment at a time that is convenient for you. We strive to provide one of the best treatments for Juvederm Boston can offer.

The Treatment Procedure

Juvederm is injected as a smooth gel. The gel contains cross-linked hyaluronic acid particles. This acid is produced naturally by the body, but mature adults experience decreasing amounts, especially after the age of 35.

The gel settles down into the subdermal layers and immediately begins to attract and hold moisture. The result is a slight plumping and increased volume. In most cases, a single treatment is all that is necessary in order to achieve a firmer skin surface and a decreased appearance of fine wrinkles. If the treatment is to add volume to the lips, we will inject the acid gel at strategic locations around the lip perimeter in order to achieve the best overall lip shape.

Customized Treatments

One of the advantages of Juvederm is that we can alter the amount of gel used for each individual client. Some areas of the face may need only a small amount of added volume. Too much moisture retention can result in bumpiness of the skin. Using just the right amount of gel is how we control the increased volume.

There is no downtime for the client after treatment. The moisture increase continues for several days. There might be a bit of bruising or swelling at the injection sites, but this is temporary and will soon go away.
